Okay, I hope this one won't be quite so tedious for you as the last one, but I have been planning this for the past several jousts just in case I won again. We all love Thanksgiving, and Christmas is definitely on the top of the list of favorite holidays. One of the thing I love best is singing carols.
The problem is, Christmas got all the great songs, and almost no other holiday has any. With the elementary kids, every October we sing Pumpkin Carols (some inspired by Linus from Peanuts). These include "Spooky Night," "We Three Ghosts," " O Skeletons," and "Oh, Come All Ye Monsters."
Your mission is to choose a holiday OTHER THAN Christmas, Thanksgiving or Halloween (with bonus points given if you detect my favorite from a hint given in this post) and write new words to an existing song (yes, it most definitely CAN be a Christmas Carol) to create a new carol for that Holiday. I may even use the top entries with the elementary kids when that holiday comes around.
Please include the name of the tune with your new lyrics so we can all sing along!
meee thay....mee thay...mee thay....
ReplyDeleteme may maw mo mooo.....
Sorry just warming up. And if you don't understand my first line of warm ups, then you definitely haven't watched enough of Barney Fife.
Ok, I don't know if you wanted anything like this or if you wanted it to be more of a carol, but when I saw your picture this song came to my mind. :0) I may come back with more of a carol later. And then again, I may not.
ReplyDeleteBEAT IT SHADOW! (For Ground Hogs’ Day)
(To the tune of…well, isn’t it obvious?)
I told my Shadow, “Don’t you come around here
This winter’s getting old, why don’t you disappear
The Judge will be in town, and the Press will be near
So beat it, just beat it”
You pack your bags and get right out of this town
We’re tired of this weather freezing all our ground
Don’t wanna have more snow, ‘cause it makes us all down
So beat it! You don’t wanna stick around
Just beat it, beat it
We don’t want this winter repeated
Take all the coldness, the frost and the ice
We just want weather that’s warm and that’s nice
So beat it, beat it
Just beat it, beat it
Just beat it, beat it
Just beat it, beat it
Sorry, I'm not doing all 4 verses and all 10 choruses. :0)
Here's mine, but Nene's is so cute I almost didn't do one. Who can beat it? :0) Delirious - I don't get it. I have tried hard to block Barney Fife from my life, even when I watched the Andy Griffith Show. :0)
ReplyDelete(Tune: Deck the Halls With Boughs of Holly)
Off we go to see the groundhog
Fa la la la la la la la la
And we hope that there will be fog
Fa la la la la la la la la
If we see the sun is shining
Fa la la la la la la la la
Then we're sure to all start whining
Fa la la la la la la la la
Please don't let him see his shadow
Fa la la la la la la la la
We're so tired of ice and bad snow
Fa la la la la la la la la
Six more weeks of nasty weather
Fa la la la la la la la la
Is sure to make us weep together
Fa la la la la la la la la
Those are the warmups Barney used before his singing lessons. lol
ReplyDeleteInklings, I can't believe you don't like Barney Fife! All my kids know that the Andy Griffith Show is my all time favorite show to watch! Although I hated Mayberry RFD. :0+
ReplyDeleteI love Barney Fife! When he left the show I didn't think it was funny anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to need a little time on this. I've been sick this week and couldn't think. I'm starting to feel better now, so I think my brain will work.
Delirious, have you had the flu?
ReplyDeleteI don't think it was the flu, just a cold. I had a flu shot, so I'm hoping I don't get the flu. But I didn't get the swine flu shot, so I hope I don't get that!
ReplyDeleteAngels we have heard on high
ReplyDeleteSinging sweetly through the night
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their heart's delight
Gloria.
It is Valentine's Day
Gloria.
It is Valentine's Day
Cupids, why this jubilee?
Why these songs of happy cheer?
What great love is there to be?
What glad tiding did you hear?
Gloria it is Valentine's Day
Gloria it is Valentine's Day
Come and let me bless you now
With deep red roses, oh so sweet;
So it is to you I bow
My friend for whom my heart does beat
Gloria it is Valentine's Day
Gloria it is Valentine's Day
See this love I have for you
Which the angels praise above;
To the end of time I will be true
And so we raise our hearts in love.
Gloria it is Valentine's Day
Gloria it is Valentine's Day
Glad I found you all again ...
ReplyDeleteBarney rocks and I love Nene's tune
Makes me laugh ;-)
Valorosa, send me an email and I'll add you as co author. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Valarosa! Glad to have you with us again!
ReplyDeleteOops typo - Valorosa - sorry. :0+
ReplyDeleteHere's my entry. It is sung to the tune of "Angels We Have Heard On High".
ReplyDelete1. It comes round just once a year.
Hearts like mine it gives such cheer.
Even older people play,
I wish it was every day.
CHORUS:
Aaaaaaaaaaapril fools, Aaaaaapril fools day
Play a prank on someone
Aaaapril fooools Aaaaapril fools day
Play a prank on soooomeeone.
2. Buy someone a dribble glass
a pillow that some gas does pass.
Put a fly in their ice cube
Cut the bottom of their toothpaste tube.
CHORUS:
Aaaaaaaaaaapril fools, Aaaaaapril fools day
Play a prank on someone
Aaaapril fooools Aaaaapril fools day
Play a prank on soooomeeone.
3. Call them up, just give a ring
Ask if their fridge is running.
If it is, then urge them fast
run and catch it before it's passed.
CHORUS:
Aaaaaaaaaaapril fools, Aaaaaapril fools day
Play a prank on someone
Aaaapril fooools Aaaaapril fools day
Play a prank on soooomeeone.
LOL that's great made me giggle
ReplyDeleteValarosa, What is your blog address? When I looked at your profile, it only listed A2A.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are so good at this!
ReplyDeleteI like what I see so far! I will let this go one more day and then make my decision on Tuesday. That will put this game at a full week. Keep 'em comin'!
ReplyDeleteOkay, this one is NOT in the contest, but now Mr. Giggles has got my mind going so I had to post this one since he loves Groundhog Day! This is to the tune of "Up On The Housetop". Once again Giggles, this is not an entry, just for fun. (Can you tell my husband's been out of town for a week):
ReplyDeleteUp on the hilltop, we all wait
Out jumps Groundhog, he's never late
Looks for his Shadow from left to right
Hope he doesn't see it in this light!
Oh, oh, No! Please don't go!
Oh, oh, No! Please don't go,
'Cause up on the hilltop, we wait in fear
We want no more winter this year!
Up on the hilltop, can it be?
Punxsutawney Phil will never see
Anyone's shadow, least not his own
For a cloud has covered the shining sun!
Oh, ho, ho! No more snow!
Oh, ho, ho! Winter go!
Oh, dance and be merry, Spring appear!
Winter be gone until next year!
Excellent, Nene! And remember everyone--I'm looking for one I could possibly sing with elementary kids--keep that in mind. Needs to be simple enough for 1st Graders....
ReplyDeleteYou know Mr. Giggles, you didn't specify that it was for 1st graders. You said you might use the top songs for them, but you didn't specifically say you were wanting that. Maybe you ought to ask everyone if they want to resubmit. So here's the question: Did you want songs for 1st graders or does it matter?
ReplyDeleteDon't worry. Accessibility for 1st graders is NOT a requirement for this game. I was just hoping....
ReplyDeleteI will make my decision tomorrow if anyone else wants to contribute. I will probably not be able to post until late tomorrow night, because of our school musical, but the decision is coming!
then Inklings is perfect ;-)
ReplyDeleteBut with this new info here's another lol
Come ye merry children for today is Groundhog Day.
We're hoping for a cloudy day to hasten Spring our way.
But if it is a sunny day we will not dismay.
We will not put our mittens away
Oh not just yet
We will not put our mittens away.
So let us watch the sky today for it is Groundhog Day.
Will our sleepy groundhog soon come running out to play?
If he does what joy he'll bring for Spring is on its way.
Then we WILL put our mittens away
Oh yes very soon
Yes we WILL put our mittens away. lol
I am at a standstill here for a second. I love all of these! I must decide, though, and have narrowed it down to the "Fa La La" of Inklings, or the "Mittens" song by Valarosa. I guarantee that the 1st graders would get at least half of Inkling's song (they LOVE to "Fa la la"), But I have to (as a music teacher) go with the one which chose not only the right holiday, but a great melody as well. Congratulations, Valarosa! You are the winner of this round! Welcome to Word Joust--I can't wait to see what you come up with for our next round!
ReplyDeleteOHHHHH !!!! cool!! Sorry I just checked in today.
ReplyDeleteI think I cheated though by entering two?
Thank you I hope your little Gr Oners like the song.
Be back shortly ... ;-)
